The town of Athlone Ireland recently honored the women and men religious who have made a great contribution to the education of its young people. The Holy Union Sisters were among those recognized. Several Holy Union Sisters and Diane Windle, Deputy Principal of Our Lady’s Bower attended the event. Sister Denise O’Brien read from an historical letter about the arrival of the Holy Union Sisters in 1884. A Mr. Maxwell, the then Town Commissioner welcomed the first sisters and Sr. Denise noted that the present councillors “are carrying on that history of kindness and acknowledgement of our work”. Sr. Rita Hayden accepted the Address of Recognition Scroll from Councillor Louise Heavin, Mayor of Athlone.
